Jeez. What’s so surprising about this story is not that Bloomberg settled a sexual harrassment lawsuit… it’s how lame his sexual statements were.
Comments attributed in the suit to Bloomberg include: “I’d f___ that in a second,” “I’d like to do that,” and “That’s a great piece of a–.”
By the way, I’ll bet Bloomie would ”f___ that in a second”. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were over in about a second as well. I’m thinking there might be some “gun control issues” of his own, so to speak.

Via Alphecca, I see that gun control activists in England are horrified that competitive shooters may actually soon be able to practice their sport in England.
Well, 50 of them anyway.

Officials are “stunned” that there were a rash of shootings in “gun free D.C.”… even with increased police presence.

Okay, this is ridiculous.
Homeowners forfeit certain freedoms of speech – such as the right to post political signs on their front lawns – when they live in a community whose homeowners’ association bans such expression, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday.
The high court ruled that homeowners’ association policies are not at odds with the state Constitution’s guarantee of free speech.

One of the personal highlights of this trip to Philly was getting to meet Eric at Classical Values… you know, one of those bloggers who actually blogs.

When a state legislator gets excited to meet you… you can’t help but feel your head swell a bit.
Of course when someone else walking by a few minutes later looks at you and asks if you can park his car… it brings you right back down to earth.

Of course, it’s against gun owners. And the NRA.
A sample:
The NRA and its friends in the “militia movement” are into the same stock-in-trade: Fear. Their target audience: Those people, generally disenfranchised white males with at most a high-school education and middling to piddling income, who suspect they’re being screwed but either have no clue who’s screwing them — or who know but don’t have the guts to fight the real enemy. The NRA and its allies push fear in general, and fear of non-whites in particular, to these white males, telling them that blacks/liberals/Jews/women/unions/etc. (but never ever ever corrupt corporations or businesses) are the cause of the white guys’ problem (and that the problem is crime, not the hyper-rich bleeding everyone below them) — then promptly sell themselves as the solution.
As has been pointed out here, here, and here… the immediate past president of the NRA just happens to blow Phoenix Woman’s conspiracy-filled rant all to hell.
Hell, for that matter, I’d think a guy like me (married to a liberal, two biracial kids) would tend to blow her argument apart as well.
And then there’s this little nugget:
But even the two-pronged sales pitch of evil can’t always win out. A growing majority of Americans is now on the opposite side of the NRA on every important issue. It’s getting harder and harder for the gun lobby to pretend that they speak for all Americans. About time, too.
Jeez, the VPC says that more Americans are opposed to the NRA? I’m shocked. Too bad it’s utter crap. Check out this poll from Pew. 52% favorable rating, 32% unfavorable. That’s an approval rating about 20 points higher than President Bush, and about 30 points higher than the approval rating of Congress.

How about a bill to ban Hillary cleavage.
Sorry for the lack of updates… it’s been a busy work week. Now I’m going to enjoy my weekend, but I should be back in full force on Monday.

Back when I lived in Oklahoma, I’d notice every now and then the Oklahoman would come out with an editorial that made you say “huh?”. Typically it wasn’t that they took a weird stance on an issue, it’s that they’d write several paragraphs and not take ANY definable stance.
Case in point: their editorial on the Castle Doctrine.

I’m so bad at self promotion (or at least I like to tell myself that). I probably should have mentioned before now that I’m filling in for Mike Church today through Thursday on Sirius Patriot 144. I’ll still be hosting “Cam and Company” as well (9 p.m. Eastern, 6 Pacific), but if you feel like tuning in to me talking about things outside of the 2nd Amendment… here’s your chance.

This time it’s not about guns, but a fee to drive in certain parts of Manhattan.
It’s not been a good couple of days for Mayor Mike.

A D.C. television station is reporting that Mayor Adrian Fenty will appeal the Parker case to the Supreme Court. The appeal hasn’t been filed yet, from what it looks like.

The Tiarht Amendment has survived the House Appropriations Committee. Look for Mayor Bloomberg to ban the letters N, R, and A in New York City sometime soon.
Or should I saw Ew Yok City?

Looks like a bill to may soon become law in California.
I’m really torn as to the nannyness of this, because it certainly is common sense. Don’t smoke in an enclosed area with your kids around because they too will be affected by your dumb decision to smoke. But at the same time, I really hate to see legislation like this. It’s similar to legislation requiring you to wash your hands after you go to the bathroom, to look both ways before you cross the street, etc.

I noticed someone had commented on an old post, so I went back through and read some of the comments.
Sorry, still don’t get it. I still don’t see it. And this business about being “bred out of existance”? What the hell’s that about? My two oldest kids are bi-racial, my three youngest kids are as pale as milquetoast. They’re all different and unique human beings. The only thing that matters in terms of their skin tone is that the three youngest don’t get tan and have to constantly wear sunscreen. Those little white babies are costing me money!!!
Seriously, if you’re all into ethnic pride, fine. Whatever. I’m not going to be able to convince you that I’m right (though I am) and that colorblindness is a good thing. But seriously…. why would you want to take pride in something your ancestors did instead of taking pride in what you’re doing today?

If you read one blog post today (well, besides this one), read Jim Geraghty’s new post at On Tap. It’s that good. And be sure to leave a comment… I have a feeling it should prompt some good discussion.

I’m out at Camp Perry, Ohio for the start of the 2007 National Matches. It’s my first time at Camp Perry, but I can already tell it won’t be my last. All of the folks I’ve met have been fantastic, and I really wish I could stay longer.
Heck, next year I want to come out to compete! Forget just doing the show here… get me out on the range.
I’ll have a few pictures when I get home, albeit from my cameraphone. Elaine took the nice new camera to her dad’s house in New Jersey yesterday.

You read this headline and you may think Americans overwhelmingly support the Nanny State.
You might be right, but looking at the polls questions over 20 years provides some evidence that things are cyclical. In the late 80’s, when we had a Republican in office the media and celebrities went nuts over trying to reduce homelessness (remember “Comic Relief”?). By 1994 there was a Democrat in the White House and the issue seemed to be on the back burner. Starting in 1999 or so there was an uptick in the number of Americans who believed that government is responsible for providing you food and shelter, and that uptick has continued through the Republican majority in the Oughties.
It would be an interesting experiment to see what would happen to that public opinion if the Democrats manage to keep both houses of Congress and win the White House in ‘08. I’m guessing by 2010 or so the number of Americans who believes this would start to decrease, simply because of the lack of media reporting on the issue.

I didn’t get near a computer yesterday, so a happy belated 4th. My dad and my stepmother came down in the morning, so we hung out ’til about 4. Then it was off to a neighbors for a cookout/tornado warning party (I thought I left tornado warnings behind when I moved to Virginia. Guess I was mistaken). Then it was back to our house to celebrate American independence by shooting off Chinese-made fireworks.
In the meantime, Elaine and I have celebrated our tenth anniversary a little early by finally plunking down the money for a digital SLR camera. This is actually more of a necessity than it might seem, because with two toddlers it’s virtually impossible to take their picture with a regular digital camera. It just takes too long between the time you press the button and when the shutter actually clicks. Not so with this new camera.
So enjoy a look at my dad and his grandkids… as well as an ultra-rare photo of my daughter Mallory, who’s home for a couple of weeks before she returns to Oklahoma for college.

Saw the new Die Hard movie on Saturday. Pretty darn good, even for a PG-13. Anyway, Wikipedia says the movie’s script is based on this Wired article from ten years ago. Pretty interesting, though if you want to see the movie without having much of an idea of what the plot is going to be, don’t click the link.
