The chief of police in Lincoln, Nebraska, recently in Washington for a conference, witnessed a criminal attack on his wife.
Lincoln Police Chief Tom Casady and his wife were strolling along Pennsylvania Avenue, “right smack dab in front of the White House,” during a visit to D.C. this week when a man dashed up and tried to grab Tonja Casady’s purse, the chief said.
When her purse didn’t come off her shoulder, the man turned toward them and spoke, Casady said, but they couldn’t understand what he said. The chief grabbed him, pushed him into a pedestrian barricade and shouted. Uniformed secret service agents near the White House responded quickly, as did city cops.
“My immediate thought was that he was either going to come back for a second try, or up the ante by producing a weapon,”
But… but… D.C. has a gun ban! How could the criminal produce a weapon?? Oh yeah, that’s right. The criminals don’t pay attention to the laws.
Just like they weren’t going to pay attention to the ban on concealed carry that Casady proposed in Lincoln. Jeez.

Odd headline, I know. But it appears as if Greg, the Yellow Wiggle, will be retiring.
This will be huge in our house, though the blow is lessened by the fact that it’s not Anthony leaving the group. Elaine might actually be depressed by that.

Just read an email from Sara who said that the Tumbleweed in Stillwater is closing in December. Bummer. I didn’t spend a lot of time there while I was in college (actually hung out at this coffee bar called the Dark Mave), but I did go a few times.
Actually when I was 18, I managed to pick up a 42-year old woman at the Tumbleweed. Yes, I’ve always had a thing for older women.

A lot of stories out there… rather than comment on all of them, here’s a brief overview of what’s going on in the world of the 2nd Amendment.
In Chicago, an amazing op/ed in support of concealed carry. Why is it amazing? Because it’s in a Chicago newspaper.
Meanwhile, the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association has won a court battle to get access to the names of NYC’s gun permit holders. Normally I’m opposed to people having access to this information, but that’s because normally we’re talking about “shall issue” laws. When the permitting process is discretionary, I don’t have a problem with doing research into who’s getting the permits.
An armed citizen in gets the jump on a group of armed robbers. It’s not the first time he’s had to defend himself either. Also of note, one of the biggest supporters of more gun control in the PA legislature says he doesn’t have a problem with the actions of the armed citizen. This pro-gun control state Senator State Representative is also going to be running for mayor of Philly. I think he might be playing politics here.
There are lots of other stories out there, but I think these are some of the more interesting.
**Update**
Whoops. Dwight Evans is a State Rep., not a State Senator. I’ve corrected my error.

Bedlam could be used to describe the scene in countless stores on Black Friday, but Oklahoma residents know the real Bedlam scene will be today in Stillwater. I’m glad to see that one of the cable channels here in D.C. is showing the game.
By the way, I didn’t hit a single store yesterday, unless you count the Smithsonian gift shop in the Museum of Natural History. I took Andrew into the city so we could go look at rocks.

Sorry for the lack of posting yesterday… hopefully there was a lack of reading as well.
I was a little late to our Thanksgiving dinner after the annual “Unexpected Holiday Trip to the Emergency Room”. This year’s trip was kind of lame (stomach pain), especially when compared to trips we’ve taken in the past (the Year of the Knife was probably the most exciting). Regardless of when I got to sit down, it was still great to break bread with my wife and children, my mother, my mother-in-law and her husband, and our friends Brian and Claire.
I have so much to be thankful for. A wonderful family. A job I look forward to every day. Good health. Great friends (and that includes you, the reader of this). When I stop and think about the blessings in my life, I get chills. So yesterday (and today) I gave thanks to God for all of the wonderful things in my life, and prayed that I will try to be worthy of all of the blessings that I have. I also want to tell you that I realize how lucky I am to have you reading these words, knowing there are a billion other websites out there you could be visiting. Thank you for stopping by.
Since my mom’s in town, we’re going to try and do the typical tourist things today. Andrew (the 6-year old) has been getting into rocks lately, so I’m taking him and my mom to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Hopefully everyone else in D.C. will be at the malls, and it won’t be too packed.

I agree with Sara about the OSU AD. Not very classy. From the news story:
Mike Holder has a message for University of Oklahoma fans balking at paying top-dollar for Saturday’s Bedlam matchup at Boone Pickens Stadium.
If you don’t like it …
“Good, stay home. Don’t come,” the Oklahoma State University athletic director said Monday. “I don’t care if any of them show up. Just bring that football team out here.”
No no, we want them to come. Why?
There still are more than 1,000 seats available on the stadium’s north side — 47 at the $250 level, 126 at the $300 level and about 1,000 at the $600 level.
If OSU doesn’t sell the tickets within the next five days, that will make it a clean sweep for nonsellouts at Boone Pickens Stadium this season — and the first true Bedlam bust in the past several years.
“We’re not going to discount any prices to try to fill (the stadium) up,” Holder said. “If it doesn’t sell out, it doesn’t sell out. It’s not the end of the world. We haven’t sold out one all year.
“We don’t rely on them for anything. Are you kidding me? Rely on OU?”
Well, you obviously can’t rely on Cowboy fans like me to buy the tickets… because we haven’t.
“It’s a different world up here now,” Holder said. “This isn’t the same old Oklahoma State. Look in that (west) endzone. My gosh. Our tickets are less expensive than the ones at OU. They sell 84,000 of them. We should be able to sell 44,000.
“We’re not going to cut ticket prices. If we want to compete with the best teams in this conference, we’ve got to increase our ticket prices. If we start winning, (fans) will come out.”
Um… Mr. Holder, that’s not typically how it works. Usually you raise ticket prices in response to a team’s success. You don’t really raise ticket prices hoping that makes the team better. And what does that mean, anway… “if we want to compete with the best teams in this conference, we’ve got to increase our ticket prices”? We’re not paying these athletes, are we? And we just had a major facility upgrade to both the basketball arena and the football stadium. So what on earth are you talking about?

A teacher in North Carolina’s been fired for some subliminal messages in a word seach handed out to students.
One of the parents is talking criminal charges.
I’m not sure what those would be. I’m kind of surprised the teacher was fired for his “Destroy America” message. On a college campus, that would be more likely to get you tenure than get you terminated.

You don’t often hear the head of a company say that about his product. Then again, this is Jones Soda we’re talking about.
Green pea, along with other unusual sodas such as turkey and gravy, dinner roll, sweet potato and antacid flavor, will be part of the company’s $10 to $15 “holiday pack” of bottled drinks available nationwide.
Peter van Stolk, chief executive of Jones Soda, said on Monday the collection of strange-flavored sodas usually sells out quickly, even though he can not stomach the drinks. Past flavors included broccoli casserole, corn on the cob and Brussel sprout.
“Why people buy it is beyond me. I can’t drink a bottle of this stuff,” said van Stolk.
In my fridge I have three bottles of Eggnog Soda from Jones. It’s not bad, but a little too sweet for my taste.

Is a 39 year old female who’s worked her way up from patrolman.
I like that. I like the fact that she’s spent her career in the force she’s now in charge of.
But lets be honest. I’m not expecting anything other than the normal platitudes. This is a political appointment, so I have a feeling that she’s going to be saying exactly what the mayor wants her to say. And knowing Adrian Fenty (the new mayor), I wouldn’t be expecting her to call for a repeal of the D.C. gun ban anytime soon.

The San Francisco 49′ers are in a dispute with the city over a new stadium, and the 49′ers have indicated they’ll move the team to Santa Clara in the near future. Now Senator Dianne Feinstein says she’s exploring legislation to prevent the team from keeping its name.
“When a team takes the name and in this case the heritage of a city, it causes great consternation,'’ the former San Francisco mayor said at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
“You can’t move to Santa Clara and call yourself the 49ers,'’ Feinstein said.
Oh really? I’d say that the Los Angeles Dodgers and the L.A. Lakers prove that you can move a team and keep their geographically significant name, even if it doesn’t make any sense.
Other teams that moved to California and kept their old names include the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics. Then there’s the Oakland Raiders (formerly the Los Angeles Raiders, formerly the Oakland Raiders).
You know, if Feinstein doesn’t think that a team has the right to keep its name if it moves, she’s not going to have much of a problem going after re-defining legally owned firearms to make them illegal.

Every now and then a television station actually reports real news during the November sweeps. Case in point: Chicago2 and their report on fudging homicide numbers in the Windy City.
But some cops, who are afraid to speak publicly, say some homicides are being hidden by classifying them as death investigations to make the city seem safer.
Police officials deny it.
“I know that every murder is captured,” said Deputy Chief of Detectives Mike Chassen. “You cannot hide dead bodies.”
CBS 2 compared lists of homicide victims over the last five years from the Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner. We eliminated cases that can’t be counted in crime statistics, such as accidental deaths.
We found more than 80 names missing from the police list — people who were beaten, burned, stabbed, and strangled in ways the medical examiner ruled to be homicides.
Not too long ago, the Village Voice raised similar questions about assault figures in New York City. I’m assuming that the Voice never looked into homicide figures because, well, it does seem difficult if not impossible to fudge those numbers. But the numbers appear to have been fudged in Chicago.
It would make a great report if some enterprising blogger or journalist were to compare the NYPD’s list of homicide victims with the medical examiner’s list. Maybe it all adds up. And maybe it doesn’t.

I went to my first NHL game over the weekend. The Capitals played the Rangers at MCI Center, I had free tickets, so Marshall (from OnTap) and I took in the game.
I’m pretty impressed with MCI Center. Andrew would really like to go see a Wizards game, but the cheapest seats are $40, which is about twice what I would normally pay for nosebleed seats. But after seeing the place in person, I think even in the upper levels you get a pretty good view. So while I’m no fan of the NBA, I’ll probably plunk down the $80 and take him to a game soon.
As far as the game goes… well, it was a little bit better than those Blazers games I loved to attend. I don’t follow the NHL at all, but living in the D.C. area you hear about Alex Ovechkin. The kid lives up to his hype. I was even more impressed with Olie Kolzig, the goalie for the Caps. He was amazing, only allowing one goal (and that was during a Rangers power play when the Rangers had pulled their goalie. 6-4’s gonna give you a bit of an advantage).
The final was 3-1, and then it was time to get home. I had taken the Metro in because I’m too cheap to park, so I was expecting to have a crammed ride. It was pretty tight for a couple of stops, but by the time we’d gotten to the Pentagon metro stop (about halfway home for me) I was able to find a place to sit.
All in all, not a bad night. A boring blog post, but a nice night.

So I’m surfing the internet trying to put my Christmas list together, and I think to myself, “You know, I always wanted an Oklahoma City Blazers jersey.”
Well, after seeing the new jerseys… not so much. When did they change to those ugly sweaters?
And someone please tell the Redhawks that there are a few people out there (well, at least one) who might want to shop the team store online. I went on a minor league baseball cap spree over the summer and I cannot tell you how bummed I was that you couldn’t order Redhawks merchandise online.

I hate to disagree with smart people, and Countertop really is a smart guy, but I think his analysis of the pro-gun/anti-gun makeup of the Senate is a little off.
Just going down the list, I’d have to disagree with his assessment of Carper in Delaware. Countertop says he’s in the middle, but NRA gave him an “F” (as did GOA). Countertop says Florida’s Bill Nelson’s in the middle, but the NRA and GOA both gave him an “F” as well. Same for Tom Harkin in Iowa and Amy Klobuchar in MN. In fact, don’t even get me started with Klobuchar.
Countertop also says Missouri’s Claire McCaskill’s a pro-gun candidate, and I have no idea where that came from. She was rated “F” by both NRA and GOA, she opposed concealed carry in Missouri (as Klobuchar did in Minnesota), and supports renewing the Clinton Gun Ban. Maybe she turns out to vote with gun owners, but there’s nothing in her past that would indicate that’s going to be the case.
So instead of Countertop’s roll call of 50 pro-gun Senators, 18 middle-of-the-road types, and 32 anti-gun Senators… I come up with 49 pro-gun Senators, 14 middle-of-the-roaders, and 37 anti-gun Senators. Now that really hasn’t changed much since the last elections. The Missouri Senate seat was the only one that flipped from pro to anti. And the good news is if you can get the Senators that don’t always vote with gun owners to vote with gun owners, you still have more than 60 pro-gun votes. The bad news is they don’t always vote with gun owners, people like Chuck Schumer are going to make it easier for anti-gun legislation to get to the floor.
Wayne LaPierre shared his thoughts on Election Day here. I think his assessment is the right one. Tuesday wasn’t a good day for gun owners. It’s not a disaster, but it should also serve as a wake up call to gun owners.

A 12-year GOP veteran was voted out in favor of one of the wussiest rockers ever. In fact, I shouldn’t even use the term “rocker”. Orleans made James Taylor look like Alice Cooper.
I’m guessing Hall wasn’t one of the “Fightin’ Dems”. Probably ran on the “I’ll restore AM Gold to America” platform.

If the Democrats don’t go nutty when they take power, they might be able to keep it. So what are they talking about?
From Farrah comes Nancy Pelosi’s plan:
“We must share the benefits of our wealth” beyond the privileged few, she added.
Say hello to socialism?
And from Charlie” target=”_BLANK”>http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/09/nyregion/09delegation.html?_r=1&oref=slogin”target=”_Blank”>Charlie Rangel:
To that end, he sketched out an expansive federal agenda: Teaming up with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on gun control, passing new tax incentives for urban job programs, and redirecting federal money to New York in return for the outsize tax collections that the federal government makes here.
Socialism and gun control. Yeah, that’s exactly what America voted for on Tuesday.

The Brady Campaign is saying that last night’s results mean Americans are in favor of gun control. Wake Up Wal-Mart is saying that last night’s results mean Americans hate Wally World.
Both of them are wrong (of course). More Americans than ever own firearms. More Americans than ever say a gun in the home makes it a safer place. And Wal-Mart keeps selling, thanks to their “always low prices”. I mean, seriously, did anybody go into the voting booth and say “I’m casting my vote against Wal-Mart!”?
Didn’t think so.
The purge of the GOP has begun, with Rumsfeld leaving and Hastert saying he won’t seek a leadership position. In addition to the Mike Pence quote from earlier, Tom Coburn is suggesting that the GOP’s problem is they abandoned the base. From Instapundit:
“This election does not show that voters have abandoned their belief in limited government; it shows that the Republican Party has abandoned them. In fact, these results represent the total failure of big government Republicanism.
I’m not sure the race boiled down to people angry over pork projects either, as much as I respect Senator Coburn.
The exit polls say that the number one issue for Americans this cycle was corruption. Yes, I know you can point to William Jefferson, Menendez, Blagojovich, and Doyle as examples of Democratic politicians who’ve had some trouble with ethics this cycle, but the majority party is going to get the spotlight.
I truly believe that in these districts that flipped, you saw Americans who’ve lost confidence in the Republicans to be the party of principle. I’m not convinced the Democrats have earned that title, but they’ve got two years to persuade voters that they made the right choice last night.
In the meantime, as a guy who’s probably more socially libertarian than conservative now (as opposed to a few years ago), I’m ready for the GOP to be the party of less government intrusion. We’ll see if the GOP is ready to take on the challenge.
Posted by: Cam
I’ve got twins crawling all over me, but I didn’t want to be accused of not wanting to talk about the elections.
The GOP got its butt kicked last night. I’m not sure the same can be said of conservatives, considering the number of blue dog Democrats that got elected… but we’ll be able to judge that one in a couple of years.
What happened? Contrary to what the Brady Campaign would say, this wasn’t a vote for more gun control laws. In many parts of the country, these freshmen Dems are guys like Heath Shuler, who openly ran as an NRA member.
I think Mike Pence had it right when he”>http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZDdiYmE5ZWFmMGIxNzEwZjM0OTY4MGJlNDk2Y2FhMzQ=”target=”_Blank”>he said Republicans lost their way. The question now is… how long does it take to find their way again?
More thoughts later when I don’t have the rugrats all over me.
