Yes, I’ll admit it. Playhouse Disney is a fixture in our house in the mornings. James loves “Little Einsteins” and would watch it for hours straight if we let him.
Anyway, before “Little Einsteins” comes on, there’s a show called “Higglytown Heroes”. It’s a bizarre show about this universe in which everybody is a matrioshka nesting doll. Every episode the little kids who star in the show run into a problem, and need to rely on the help of a “hero” to save the day. Firefighters, EMT’s, coaches, doctors, and bankers have all been heroes. Today’s “hero” takes the cake, however.
Today’s hero was an “environmentalist” who saved ducks from being covered in oil. Why were the ducks covered in oil? Because apparently every stinking motorboat in Higglytown is leaking oil like the Exxon Valdez.
I’m still waiting for the Higglytown Hunter to be a hero.
my little sis watches those shows. She said Higglytown was whimpy. Yeah she’s six going on 16.
Okay, the twins are 11 months old. I can see how a six year old would think Higglytown Heroes are “wimpy”, although I was very pleased to see five year old Andrew laugh during Breakfast with Bear today. I like to see my kids get to be kids.
Gawd, I’m glad I don’t have to go through raising children with this crap on TV. You’re right Cam, doubtful that a hunter or fisherman will ever be cast as a hero in Higgleytown, even though most hunters and fishermen were enviornmentalist before it became a bad word. I’m 60 years old and can vividly remember the time when deer and wild turkey were unheard of in western Oklahoma. Thanks to the efforts of the hunters in Oklahoma, this game is now abundant. Same with fish. At one time there were very few lakes in Oklahoma, now there are plenty. And with the lakes come more fish.
I grew up on Electric Company,”Big Bird” and the Muffet Show.
I cant get into the cartoons these days, to me they are wacked. But, I have no young kids in the house to see any differenly.
Though I am happy when my kids where younger like yours, they didnt even get into them Telly Tubbies….THANK GOD! Kinda Rainbow lovers if you ask me.
(10:10)
You know, I really miss Elmer Fudd shooting into the rabbit hole. Not to mention the antics of Wile E. Coyote.
I am really glad I grew up when I did.
(Did I say I grew up?)
On the off chance I should ever have kids, they’ll be raised on a steady diet of reruns of Mister Roger’s Neighborhood, old school Sesame Street, and Reading Rainbow. Good solid shows that didn’t try to indoctrinate kids with liberal multi-culturalist nonsense.
Oh! Terry yes I loved those also! And dont grow up…. Just pay your bills on time
I agree Brett. I wouldnt want to raise kids today at all.
There are no WHOLESOME shows anymore. Its all about witch craft, dancing gay aliens, and what ever else they can wack our kids with that is just sickening and demeaning in so many ways.
Terry,
FYI, I too love and miss those cartoons/ Does that make us bad people? Anyhoo, I went to Amazon.com and was going to order Bugs, Daffy, Elmer and the gang on DVD. I was shocked, SHOCKED I tell you when I saw a disclaimer that read “Due to the graphic nature, these cartoons are not recommended for children under 14.” Also, I understand from some ebayers that certain scenes have been cut from certain DVD’s especially where Bugs dresses up, looks like and is referred to as a “Jap.”
Also, these things are not cheap. I bought the old Jonny Quest DVD’s for my daughter and another set for my brother’s quadruplets (you people whining about raising twins are lightweights!).
Th tha tha tha that’s all folks!!
I think there was a fisherman once.
Oh, I don’t know about that Ruby. I think for the most part the Playhouse Disney shows are pretty good.
The problem is when the kids get a little bigger. Luckily, Andrew likes to watch the Boomerang channel, which is nothing but cartoons from the 80’s and before. He can watch Looney Tunes to his hearts content there.
Cam-
See my youngest is 18. And she loves Jack also. So no cartoons are in our house.
We dont even get cable, had the dish, then I went thru the midlife crisis and got a bike.
Nuff Said
My five year-old is a Disney Channel fan (in fact, before 9:00 PM, if the TV is on, that is the only channel the kid knows). She is also a fan of Higglytown but she only gets to see it on Sunday mornings when she gets up at 7:30 AM and I go downstairs, fix her breakfast, and she eats while watching the TV.
Higglytown must have worked their way through the obvious “heroes” and now is scraping the bottom of the barrel for anyone to use. Who would not be a freakin “hero”? Watch the exciting upcoming episodes for:
- Teen Pregnancy Crisis Hotline Hero
- Tatoo Artist Hero
- Diversity Awareness Counselor Hero
Real Heroes that will never make the Higglytown cut:
- Border Patrol Officer Hero
and of course
- Blogger Hero
Drudge reported that Disney is giving money to the Republicans.
The other hero I’m still waiting for is the “military” hero. The one who comes out and defends Higgyland from all enemies, foreign & domestic.
Anybody else notice that with a couple of exceptions (the pizza guy), all the “heros” are women?
I think you all are overreacting. The show is about ordinary folks in the neighborhood who are heros. Garbage man, police man, fire man, everyone. The environmentalist saved a duck. What’s wrong with that? I didn’t see the show suggesting that children should support the entire environmentalist agenda. They don’t show some guy spray painting SUVs. Is anyone against helping ducks that have been hurt by an oil spill? Anyone? Raise your hand.
I have 5 year old twins who like the show and we also have a boat. No longer will it be on the tv in my house. The environmentalist episode is the reason. Up until now it has all been harmless and cute, although a bit silly, but then again I’m 38 years old. To make the assumption that all boats should be banned from the lake is over the top and ignorant. I love boating and so does my family. I see this as an attack on my lifestyle. I will not support such a show. A message for Disney; watch it. Those of us who can afford your products and vacations are those of us with the means to have such things as boats. I’ll wait to see your change in attitude before I spend any more money with your company.
I’m still stunned by this Higglytown Heroes “Environmentalist” episode. Simply put, it was the most agressive political agenda I’ve ever seen work its way into children’s television. In case you think we’re being overly dramatic, let me tell you what happens in this episode. The Higglytown Heroes gang shows-up at the local lake (which is the size of a pond). In addition to the 50 or more boats on this body of water they also see a small family of ducks swimming in an oily morass of water. Let me emphasize that the entire body of water appears saturated with oil, water and garbage. One of the Higglytown Heroes says, “There’s too many boats on this lake.” Their solution is to evict all boats from the lake and erect a sign that says no boats allowed. The water is then blue and clean. The episode ends with the whole cast of characters literally singing the praises of of their new environmentalist friend.
I’m not saying my kid is now going to leave high school for GreenPeace, but this is how kids start to feel guilty and that something is wrong with them. I live in Michigan which, until last year, had the highest number of registered boaters in the US. I was glad to be watching this episode with my daughter so I could put it in the proper perspective. We had a good discussion about not everything being true on tv.
