Delay

I guess there’s no ignoring the story, no matter how much I might not want to talk about it.

There’s just no excuse for the delay the ratification of Turkey’s customs union.

Seriously, I said this in the comments below. I just don’t really have anything to say about the DeLay situation. I don’t even really understand the charges, to be honest. According to this account, there’s no money laundering. Even the WaPo came out against this indictment. But I’m always reluctant to try and prejudge trials. It’s why I never talked about Kobe Bryant while every other talk show host in the country was fixated on it (I stayed away from the Scott Peterson trial for entirely different reasons).

Does this hurt Republicans? I suppose to some extent it does… but maybe not. This Rasmussen poll suggests that more Americans believe it’s a political game, not an honest indictment. That could hurt Democrats. And DeLay was the guy who said there was no pork to be cut in the budget a few weeks ago. This gives the GOP an opportunity to have a House leader who’s more serious about cutting spending.

I like Tom DeLay, and as I said below, I don’t think we’ll see a trial, but I could be wrong.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

You’re quite right about Turkey, Cam. One way of defeating Radical Islamic terrorism is to show that moderate muslims can both prosper and get on in the world. Alas, Franco-German racism and hegemony (and let’s be honest here, that’s what this is about) has got in the way. What sort of signal does this show, when a modern secular Muslim country is not rewarded for actually trying to live in the 21st century? Isn’t this the sort of thing the west, especially Europe, should be striving for?

Look at it like this - if Turkey can join the EU, that would help drag it out from its malaise and make it a force for peace and understanding between wildly different cultures. If Turkey joins, it could one day lead to North Africa and even Russia joining… But right now, the EU is an excuse for lazy authoritarian governments to keep people with brown skin OUT and lazy, inefficient bureaucrats and farmers in business.

I fear the radical Christians more then I do the Radical Muslims. While the Muslims post the immediate, and in your face threat. Radical Christians in my opinion hurt us the most in the long run.

The biggest issue being discrimatory in law to other religions, and also.. the highly debated topic of homosexual marriages. I don’t know where you stand, my personal morales as a Christian, I am against. As an advocate of equality, I’m for, plus, they’ll quit parading and marching all the time.

On the account of DeLay, I’m still honestly skeptical. There’s a difference between possibilites and probabilities. It’s all very possible, and some even probable. I think a probable answer would be, if it was… it was a mistake, nothing intentional. If they were going to launder money, the Republicans know how to do it. (eg: Straight from the tax payers into Halliburton’s pockets through “bids on contracts”)

Sorry… no liberal post on Republican money is complete without a reference to the shady contracts with Halliburton. :-)

    — Because we all know how wonderful those fuzzy widdle islamofascists are to homosexuals, don’t we Michael?

I know you feel you must express your liberal view of things, Michael, but can we at least try to avoid statements that are universally considered to be absurd? I mean, gosh, I’m just trying to help out your credibility here… lol

How strange. Michael says “no liberal post on Republican money is complete without a reference to the shady contracts with Halliburton.”

Why is it then, when a conservative posts something with a reference to Bill Clinton’s shady dealings, all the people who died in his wake, all the people who were indicted and jailed during Clinton’s Regime, the liberals always claim such a reference is “an attack?”

And those hits just keep on coming.

Now the news is out that Ronnie Earle, the Travis County prosecutor, tried to get Delay indicted on a total of three Grand Juries. It was only the third one that brought forth the indictment on their first day of empanelment. Both of the other Grand Juries refused to indict, and Earle has had three years to get the evidence to present to the Juries. On top of all of that, he came up with “new” evidence over the weekend, and that just makes his whole case seem a little shaky.
