And most everybody under the age of thirty says “W. Mark Who?
I confess, I was hoping it was going to be someone a little more high profile.

Is this guy offering any proof or is he just trying to raise some money? I was in kindergarten but remember watching Watergate on tv, when I was a kid we only had 4 tv channels and I had to get up to change the channel……did I mention the floor was cold and it was up hill both ways….lol
You forgot the stream you had to wade across. I don’t even remember this guy. He was 2nd in charge at the FBI?
WHAT!? You guys had TV? With 4 freakin channels!????
The rich are always whining about something!
Anyhoo, this makes me very suspicious. Anytime the media starts focusing on something that happened 30 years ago, it makes me wonder what is happening right now they don’t want us to know about.
Ted Kennedy kill somebody again? (Ted was sooooo greatful for the Moon landing back in July 1969 so it got him off the front page, at least.) Hillary indicted, maybe? Sen. Robert Byrd do a little cross burning over the weekend?
What is it they aren’t telling us?
Looks like Bob Woodward confirmed it. Surely you remember who he was.
This is amusing, because just last week I was reading an article from an old copy of the Smithsonian…
www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian/issues03/dec03/presence.html
in which the article’s author was sure that Deep Throat was actually Fred Fielding, who was John Dean’s assistant at the White House. Guess he lost that bet…
Joe — I always thought it was Linda Lovelace… — Anthrax
Bob Woodward has been lying about Watergate for thirty years. Woodward has said that Mark Felt was not the so-called Deep Throat and Woodward has said that Felt was. Well you can be sure that Woodward was lying about at least one of those stories.
As for Felt, he can not a aingle source Deep Throat. There were only six persons in the World who knew of the infamous eighteen minute gap and Felt was not one of those six. You need to find another Deep Throat. Woodward is still lying.
So where do I sign?
This Mark Felt was passed over for the top FBI job - obviously, for good reason. He could not be trusted with the job and he has proven it. He released information in an on-going investigation, thereby violating his oath and the public trust. This man is no hero, he is a criminal.
None of this diminishes Nixon’s involvement in the cover-up, but I have to conclude that the cover-up would not have taken place in the first place had the investigation been allowed to take its normal course. There would have been no need. Panic caused the attempted cover-up when it became known that there was to be an attempt to implicate Nixon. Nixon was never accused of, nor convicted of any involvement in the break-in. He fell into a trap.
I believe the break-in was unnecessary as well. A search warrant would have discovered anything untoward going on at the DNC’s suite at the Watergate. Covert operations such as that break-in by the FBI are the sort of violations the Constitution is supposed to protect us from. If there is enough evidence or corroboration, obtaining a warrant should not be a problem.
I believe there would be less deviant activity requiring warranted searches if there were more overt requests for warrants rather than covert operations. If it became known by the deviants that their activity is to be investigated, maybe they would be less inclined to engage in that activity. And, any “evidence” found during any of these covert operations would most likely be inadmissable in court.
The whole debacle was unnecessary, was embarrassing for the nation, and most likely enriched some of the “major players”. Other than to take down a president, which I believe was a suprise to those involved - an added benefit they didn’t or couldn’t have forseen - the only purpose was to “scoop” the story and get rich.
I’m curious what those two reporters had on Felt that “convinced” him to leak the story. Or, maybe I should wonder how much they paid him. There had to be something sinister involved. Felt was no whistle blower. Whistle blowers go public.

I’m w/ you Woody. It appears the Felts are out for some $$ now, he probably was back then too.
What torques me is how the media is saying this guy is a “true American Patriot.” Kathleen Willey, Monica Lewinsky, Linda Tripp, etc. were all lied about and destroyed by the Billary Machine. Funny how when a bimbo erupted with dirt on Bill, they were suddenly the target of an IRS audit. Guess when you are the Number Two man in an organization and you have dirt on a Republican, instead of going to your boss you just go to the media and become a “patriot.”
From reading some of the comments here, you’d think Nixon was the hero of Watergate and the guys doing the break-in were just hapless victims of a greedy pair of journalists.
For the moment, I’ll go with what Frank Keating, a Republican and a former FBI man and former prosecutor, had to say about it- Felt may not be a hero, but given the circumstances his best choice was to go to the media and let the public sort it out. He couldn’t go to his bosses, or the normal channels, because they were appointed by the President who was implicated in the cover-up.
Some people went to jail and Nixon resigned before being impeached. Ford pardoned Nixon and lost to Carter in the process. In the end, that’s all that will be remembered.
Flatone7,
There was no cover-up activity until after the story broke. And, why did Felt remain anonimus?
There were no heros involved in the debacle on either side.
Woody
I hadn’t seen or heard of Frank “foot in my mouth” Keating’s comments. What is he up to these days?
I don’t want to argue history here, but didn’t the burglary occur before Woodward and Bernstein’s story broke? Seems to me, considerin’ the close ties of the burglars to the White House, that some coverin’ up plans might have got into the plannin’ stage soon after the arrest of the fab five.
But you’re right, this was a shameful debacle for the country. I just have a hard time following your logic that there wasn’t a bad side versus a good side. Wasn’t it just the guys who broke the laws against the guys who told the story that led to the guys doin’ the prosecutin’?
Funny how repugnicans curse revisionist history, then practice it when they can’t remember the real story and/or want to make a villain seem like a hero. What do those of you defending Nixon make of the convictions - a whole cadre of “activist judges,” I suppose? The link between Nixon and the Watergate burglars was a member of his re-election campaign. They weren’t simply breaking in for the fun of it, they were planning on bugging Democratic campaign offices. That Nixon immediately went into coverup mode is an indication of the modus operandi of the White House at that time. Nixon bought his own ticket when he used his re-election funds to pay off the burglars to keep quiet - and then they began to turn on him, just like any other band of thieves would, and demand more money to keep quiet (c.f. Howard Hunt). And Nixon just kept digging himself in deeper - when John Dean went to him to suggest separating himself from his little bag job buddies, Nixon instead sought out a million more dollars.
Question Felt’s motives all you like, but in this instance he followed the letter of the law as best available to him and it resulted in removing a cancer from the country. If you want to call yourself a patriot, quit defending criminals and criminalizing those that act in the best interest of our country.
Hey “Anonymus”(or should we call you “He who has no name”), are you a member of the “Felt” family or a reporter for the WaPo? Stand up and be counted, sir or madam.
Woody
Isn’t it amazing how these liberals claim to have all the answers? Also, notice how they have names for those of us here, “repugnicans” yet these gutless, ignorant, worthless, scumbag liberals don’t have the cajones to give themselves a name?
Isn’t it amazing how conservatives consistently fail to address the topic at hand when their revisionist histories fall apart, and fall back upon their default, puerile modus operandi - ad hominem attacks?
No-name, did you just buy that phrase book, or has it been in the family for years?
And just think, all along some more recent in the White House believed Deep Throat was really Monica Lewinsky.
Martin,
Sooooooo original.
Blowjob
I guess we can refer to no-name as the Gutless Wonder. Yeah, he/she is real credible, hiding behind anonymity.
