While I’m getting caught up on everything, here are a few items from around the internet that caught my fancy.
Columnist Ben Shapiro has a new book that came in my mailbox today. Looks very interesting from what I’ve read so far.
Michelle Malkin says hot conservative girls are getting together. Be still my beating heart!
Mark at Constitutional Conservative found all is not as it appears to be when it comes to critics of Arizona’s new gun safety course.
John McCain says he’d love to be President, but it depends on what happens in 2006. See Farrah’s post here for some interesting background on McCain’s recent comments.
Sorry for the lack of blogging. Lots of real-life stuff to catch up on (including the twins first round of shots at the doctors office… yikes!). I’ll try to most more this weekend, but here’s an open thread for y’all to flame away in. Just try to keep it reasonably civil.
John McCain is sponsoring the Clean Sports Act of 2005.
The legislation aims to require standardized testing procedures and stiffer punishments for athletes who test positive for banned substances.
McCain, joined by fellow Republican Congressmen Mark Souder of Indiana and Thomas Davis of Virginia and Democrats Henry A. Waxman of California and Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, called at a news conference for the four major professional leagues to institute a system at least as tough as the one for the Olympics.
Anything for a soundbite, I suppose. But the idea of a bunch of politicians trying to “clean up” professional sports is a bit ironic, isn’t it?

Arizona taxpayers, and to some extent all US taxpayers are paying to educate the children of Mexico.
Students living in Mexico have been regularly crossing the border to attend school in a remote southern Arizona community, a misuse of taxpayer funds, the state’s top education official said Wednesday.
State schools Superintendent Tom Horne said an investigator he sent to the port of entry in Lukeville videotaped students walking across the border to a bus stop 200 yards north, then taking school buses to the community of Ajo.
Are you suprised?
Before you know it, there’ll be an advocacy group popping up to demand the school busses be sent over the border so these kids don’t have to walk so far.
With the MSM going absolutely nuts over John McCain and his role in the Great Judicial Compromise of 2005, the McCain 2008 buzz is starting to heat up. The MSM is giddy at the thought, while conservatives are poo poohing McCain’s chances and convincing the base to vote for him in the primaries.
Count me as one of those poo poohers. McCain probably won’t get the base to vote for him, especially if the current Arizona governor, Janet Napolitano (D) is re-elected. If Arizona elects a Democratic governor in 2006, McCain 2008 is just a fantasy.
Arizona has a “Resign to Run” law. Any public official seeking election in an office which they do not currently hold, must resign in order to run. In order to run for President in 2008, McCain would have to resign as Senator. The governor then has the authority to appoint the replacement until the next election. And if it’s Governor Napolitano, you can bet she’d appoint a Democrat as McCain’s replacement.
If McCain does this, the conservative base of the Republican party will put a preverbial target on his chest. He can kiss the GOP nomination good-bye. You think conservatives are pissed off now? Just wait. The 2006 election in Arizona and the time period in which McCain needs to declare his candidacy for President are close enough to the 2008 primaries so as not be forgotten by the conservative base of the Republican party (unlike his role in the Great Judicial Compromise of 2005). If, by chance, the Senate remains closely divided, and McCain’s resignation passive aggressively shifts the balance of power to the Democrats, McCain 2008 will sink faster than Dean 2004.
Governor Napolitano is heavily favored to win re-election in 2006. The Arizona Republican party has yet to settle on a favored candidate to face her. Rumours circulating out here vary from Phoenix Suns owner Jerry Colangelo to Marylin Quayle, wife of the former Vice President. So far, Janet has outpolled any Republican candidate. The only candidate to come close to her numbers has been J.D. Hayworth. And he’s already stated he will seek another term in the House in 2006.
If McCain wants the nomination in 2008, watch for him to start pushing state party leaders for a candiddate. Watch for him to spend a significant chunk of his time, and his goodwill with the MSM campaigning for whomever the Arizona Republican party puts up against Napolitano.
There’s a lot of “if’s” going on here, I know. But the bottom line is, the way Napolitano is polling now, to ensure he even has a chance at the GOP nomination in 2008, McCain’s going to have to get a Republican elected as governor in this state. That’s too much to ask for one person, even the “Maverick” John McCain.
I cannot believe this is a real book.
You know it’s bad when it’s too racy for the librarians to consider stocking it.
I can’t believe the twins are already 8 weeks old. Elaine took a couple of pictures this morning… thought I’d share with you.
That’s James looking oh-so-spiffy in his “Who’s Your Daddy” shirt. I guess now there’s no doubt that I’m on the “dark side”.
I really wanted to find a “Dropkick Murphys” onesie for Catherine, but I couldn’t find any. Flogging Molly will have to do for now. I was kind of hoping her red hair would be more visible, but (like her dad), she’s starting to go bald on top.
As an aside, I think they’re starting to look more alike. At birth it was very easy to tell them apart. I can still see the differences, but they’re definitely looking like brother and sister now.
I’m watching the season finale of “House” on Fox (the only show besides “24″ that I watch on a regular basis), and my wife asks me to look up some of the cast on IMDB.
So I do. And I’m looking at the trivia for Robert Sean Leonard when I find out something weird. Leonard grew up on the same block as actor Casper Van Dien.
What’s weird about that, you ask? This was in Ridgewood, New Jersey… where I lived for about two years as a kid.
My brother was actually friends with Robert Sean Leonard, who at the time was a chubby hoodlum named Bobby. Bobby was not a good actor back then. In fact, according to my brother he couldn’t even get a role in the junior high production of “My Sister Eileen”. My brother got the lead… which tells me Bobby’s acting ceiling was considerably higher than that of my brother.
I also distinctly remember making Bobby Leonard laugh so hard that hot cocoa came out of his nose, but that’s a story for another time.
Anyway, now I’m wondering if Casper Van Dien also hung out at my house when I was 7. An odd thing to wonder about, but I can’t help it. Did “Tarzan” sneak beers out of my fridge?
Glenn Reynolds asks if we can save the 1st Amendment from the media.
The future of the media, and media bias, was Topic A at a forum hosted by Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) on Capitol Hill today. Those speaking included Al Franken and Randi Rhodes from Air America, David Brock from Media Matters for America, Eric Alterman, and John Aravosis from America Blog.
I wasn’t there, but I did have a camera crew (and yes, if someone with more bandwidth is interested, I can try to send a video file) there. Holy macaroni.
I think my favorite moment had to be Randi Rhodes proclaiming that liberals are being blacklisted in our country’s newsrooms. In fact, she said that if you’re a liberal, you will have a hard time finding a job as an investigative reporter.
Tell that to the folks at IRE, Randi. Tell that to the keynote speaker, Dan Rather. Tell it to anyone but me, Randi… because I’m not buying what you’re trying to sell me.
Hey, I just noticed I got namechecked by Instapundit.
Namecheck is cool. A link is cooler, but that’s what I get for sending him an email from a non camedwards.com account. Next time I’ll know better.
Thanks, Glenn!

On the judicial nominations: It started out as an ideological battle, and ended up just another political exercise. Not surprised at all, really. Disappointed… maybe. But maybe the gnashing of teeth from the right, coupled with the teeth gnashing over how Voinovich and others handled the Bolton nomination will convince these Senators that “hey, maybe we ought to start pandering to the people who voted for us for a change”.
Or maybe not, and maybe the Democrats will make some gains in 2006, not because they have a better issue, but because conservatives are getting more and more ticked off at their own candidates.
Gerahty’s got a great roundup of other reactions here.
John Kerry’s signed his Form 180, but don’t expect to see his military files any time soon. And I wouldn’t hold my breath on John McCain or other GOP Senators asking Kerry about a release date for those files.
The trial for a new election has begun in Washington State, and as usual Stefan Sharkansky has all the links you need at Sound Politics. Stefan will also be on Cam and Company this afternoon at 3:20 Eastern.
If you’re not reading James Lileks, you are my enemy.
Or something like that. Where’s George Lucas and his screenwriting genius when I need him?

Howard Kurtz tries to paint the “media is anti-military” meme as the rantings of conservatives in today’s WaPo.
Newsweek “wanted the story to be true,” says Rush Limbaugh, because the media “have an adversarial relationship with America” and “end up siding with the bad guys.”
Some news outlets “magnify every mistake the military makes in order to hammer the Bush administration,” says Bill O’Reilly. The Wall Street Journal editorial page blames “a basic media mistrust of the military that goes back to Vietnam.” Columnist Jonah Goldberg decries “the media’s unreflective willingness to undermine the war on terror.”
Is any of this true? Or has Newsweek’s retracted story simply handed the right a new club with which to beat journalists?
Torie Clarke, who was the Pentagon’s top spokeswoman during the Iraq war, says: “My gut tells me it’s just another element in the general dislike of the mainstream news media that some conservatives have. I don’t think the theory that there’s an anti-military bias holds up on the whole.” If anything, Clarke says, “there is a greater appreciation and respect for what the military does than 10 or 15 years ago” — thanks in part to the embedding program she pushed in Iraq.
Yet Kurtz leaves out an important piece of evidence that the MSM are indeed anti-military. ABC White House Correspondent Terry Moran as much as said so last week while being interviewed by talk show host/blogger Hugh Hewitt.
So what’s the deal, Howard? Were you unaware of Mr. Moran’s comment, or did it not fit your theme of painting conservatives as off-base?
**Update**
The Moran quote is included in the web edition of the Kurtz’s column, but is not in the print edition of the WaPo. That to me is almost more egregious, because it implies that Kurtz knew about Moran’s comment, but didn’t consider it important enough to be included in his essay on possible military bias.
Senator Chuck Schumer’s comparing himself to the Jedi.
“We are the Jedi knights. We have the light source.”
Excuse for a second the inane “We have the light source” comment (was he referring to the Force?). I think Schumer may be onto something here.
If Schumer’s correct, then before long there’ll only be two Democrats left in the Senate!
Still don’t get that “light source” comment. Lightsaber? Force?
Glenn Reynolds isn’t the only one who can blog from hospitals. Harrison fell down and possibly broke his wrist so I’m spending the evening in the ER. You’d think he would have at least had the courtesy to wait until I’d had dinner to fall down.
Hope your evening is better than Harrison’s.
I’ve never seen The Empire Strikes Back.
Just had to get that off my chest.

Didn’t get home until 3:15 this morning, so there was NO way I was staying up to write this.
Saw the midnight showing of “Revenge of the Sith” last night, ostensibly so that I would know if it’s okay for Andrew to see it. And the answer is… I’m not sure that it is.
Without giving anything away, I’ll just say that it’s the emotional themes that (to me anyway) give the movie a PG-13 rating.
The special effects are incredible, Ewan MacGregor is Alec Guinness’s Obi Wan Kenobi, Hayden Christiansen isn’t as bad an actor as I thought, and I would make Natalie Portman my love slave in a heartbeat.
On the other hand… there are your typical Lucas-lines that can’t help but be delivered in a clumsy way. There are a number of plot holes and some additional character development was needed in my opinion.
But you know, this is Star Wars. It’s not Shakespeare. And as a horse opera set in space, I thought it did a pretty good job. Just not sure I want Andrew to see it yet.
I think this lady missed the whole point of the Dark Side, Storm Troopers, Good vs. Evil and all that.

From the “What the Hell?” files: Man Set on Fire By Teens
A real-life supermom used a bottle of breast milk to douse an amputee yesterday after his wheelchair was set ablaze by punks on a Staten Island bus, cops said.
The nursing mother’s fast actions helped save Vietnam vet Francis Abrams, 57, from becoming a human torch, and stopped the fire from engulfing the S-54 bus, police and the victim said.“It was put out with breast milk,” said a police source, who was awed by the bizarre incident that happened just after 11 a.m.
Abrams, who lost his left leg in Vietnam, said he was minding his own business as he rode the city bus to the Staten Island Mall to buy a video of “The Exorcist.”
Just after he boarded the bus, three teens playing hooky from Tottenville High School pulled a cruel prank, cops said.
“They set my chair on fire,” an angry Abrams said last night, refusing to allow photographers to take pictures of his face. “They thought it was a joke.”
Cops said the teens used a cigarette lighter to ignite a plastic bag hanging from the back of Abrams’ motorized wheelchair.
The flames quickly engulfed the bag, containing the Greek classics “Odyssey” and “Iliad.”
As the fire spread to Abrams’ jacket, he screamed: “Water!”
As her baby looked on, the new mom and a friend sprang into the action, dousing the fire with a freshly pumped bottle of breast milk and another bottle of water, authorities said.
The Daily News article focuses on the fact that the fire was put out by breast milk. Who cares? Isn’t the real news that three teenagers thought it would be amusing to try and set fire to a guy in a wheelchair?
The twins are seven weeks old today. Pretty amazing that no one in the house has lost their minds yet.
Things seem to be settling down into a manageable routine. Mallory’s been a huge help to Elaine with cooking dinner, Harrison’s a big help in dealing with the kids in the afternoon, and even Andrew’s quickly becoming a big brother with lots of hugs and kisses for the babies.
That leaves me plenty of time for the Xbox! Just kidding.
Tonight the boys (including James) stayed home while the girls went to a local crafts store to peruse the yarn selection. I ended up walking the neighborhood with James while Andrew and Harrison watched “Return of the Jedi”. Andrw really wanted to watch a movie with Darth Vader in it. I know, “Empire” would have been a better choice, but hey, he’s four. He likes Ewoks and the dark side.
