Fighting the Nanny State Since 2003

Paging Roxanne

Liverpool, England’s getting ready to get randy.

England’s first prostitution tolerance zone could be set up within months after councillors in Liverpool approved the move.
They will now write to Home Secretary Charles Clarke to get his approval for the scheme.

Up to five areas of the city could be earmarked as vice-friendly zones but council leaders say the locations have not been decided.

Under the plan, sex for sale would be allowed during the night.

A Liverpool City Council spokeswoman said: “The council has voted with an overwhelming majority to approach the Home Office with our plans.

“The majority was so clear vocally that we did not need to take a hand count on it. It was a very rapid decision.

“This means we are going to move quickly in approaching the Home Office with our plans and the ball will be in their court.

“It is now up to the Home Office to decide if we can have the UK’s first official managed zone.”

So guns are banned, but prostitution’s okay? England’s a wacky place these days.

Britain under Blair is always contradicting itself. The government tries to be more right wing than the Tories, but also throw in ‘progressive’ gestures like this in an attempt to show how piously left-wing it still is. Either way it’s the same result: an over-centralised, bossy bureacracy headed by an over-bearing, vain prima donna and his party of timid zombies. That’s why handguns get banned and prostitution sort of gets legalised (but in a weak compromise that sits on the fence): we’re run by a party that combines the worst of Tory authoritarianism with the worst of Labour’s nanny state. You Americans on the right might like him, but try living under his interfering, bully-boy stare and see how much you like him then!

That’s not to say some liberalisation of prostitution is not needed. Keeping it banned doesn’t stop 1000s of prostitutes from selling themselves every night to feed themselves, their drug habits, their kids or their ‘bosses’. I’ve seen too many ragged looking women selling themselves for a pittance in London to think that the status quo is helping much But ‘tolerance’ (read: blind eye) areas won’t solve anything, since it means looking the other way other than actually doing something. Another lame fudge, in other words.

I’m sorry, England. Offering up your pulchritude for bedding won’t be enough to overcome the lack of defense of one’s self.

England may be a “whacky place” these days, but it looks like there’s gonna be a little less whacking off going on if this law passes.

I believe that prostitution should be legalized and regulated. Not legalizing it creates criminals and a whole slew of other social problems (lack of medical care, unsafe working environments etc) I would like to believe that maybe they’re coming around.
