Fighting the Nanny State Since 2003

Jeff Aitkin gives me hope for future generations, and reminds me there are still good parents out there.

On December 11, Aitkin found $20,500 in a supermarket parking lot. He turned it in to Police even though his family could have used the money.

His parents should be very proud of the job they did, they raised a good kid. It’s nice to hear about kids doing good deeds once in a while, isn’t it?

Ramsey Clark, the war criminal’s best friend, has joined Saddam’s defense team.

I wish the Bush Administration had the sack to prosecute him for treason.

Officials in Sri Lanka are wondering why they aren’t finding any dead animals among the destruction left by the tsunami.

Those of us who have lived in earthquake prone areas * know why this is. Animals sense the P Waves (compression waves that travel like sound through the earth’s crust) from an earthquake, and humans cannot. Animals know when an earthquake is coming well before it gets there. During the Northridge earthquake in 1994, our family dog started barking and scratching at the door about a full minute before we felt the earth move.

The animals in Sri Lanka knew an earthquake was coming, and moved to higher ground.

*I grew up in Simi Valley, CA and experienced the 1994 Northridge quake first hand. (Royal High class of ‘94 if anyone wants to check up on that)

Let’s see if Oklahoma State can be as victorious tonight as the Wyoming Cowboys were in their bowl game.

Between my Red Sox winning the World Series and the Wyoming Cowboys winning their first bowl game in 38 years, this has been a very good year for KTOK alums.

No, not because I support their cause, but because they really know how to draw attention to their message.

Case in point - Today in Phoenix, a young female PETA member will be protesting the meat industry by wearing nothing but body paint. She’ll be downtown near the BOB for all to see.

That in itself would garner a fair amount of publicity - PETA events usually do. But I predict today’s protest will be covered all over the country.

Why?

Because it’s raining in Phoenix today.

Back when I had hair (and even for a few years when I did not), I really wanted to make it as a musician. Never happened, obviously. And now I’m glad it didn’t.

I picked up Jacob Slichter’s So You Wanna Be A Rock and Roll Star at the library last night. Couldn’t go to sleep until I had finished it.

Slichter’s the drummer for the group Semisonic, who had a pretty big hit with “Closing Time”. His book, detailing the rise and fall of a pretty good pop band who had one big hit, might be my favorite book of the year. It’s not a book about the excess of a rock star lifestyle. It’s a book about the business of being a rock star. And while the business sounds crummy, the book is anything but.

One Ohio family’s more than a little shocked at the Christmas-morning fare on the local cable access channel… porn.

“I turn it to Channel 15 and there’s this naked lady on the screen — I mean full-frontal, get-the-hell-out-of-here pornography,” said David Umana. “When I tell about Christmas 2004, I’m betting this will be one of my best stories.”

Probably little Billy’s best story as well, Dad. Actually, the kids weren’t in the room, the cable company says it made a mistake, and we get to read one of my favorite quotes of the year. Sounds like a happy ending to me.

….are soon parted.

Someone paid $455 in an eBay auction for three tablespoons of water from a cup Elvis Presley drank out of in 1977.

I wonder if there was a premium paid for Elvis’ backwash.

Can someone please explain how global warming could possibly impact tectonic shifts in the earth’s crust?

CNS News is reporting that Reuters “reporters” are trying to link global warming and the disaster in South Asia.

“A creeping rise in sea levels tied to global warming, pollution and damage to coral reefs may make coastlines even more vulnerable to disasters like tsunamis or storms in [the] future,” wrote Alister Doyle, an environmental correspondent for Reuters, who attributed the opening paragraph of the story to “experts.” However, Doyle’s story did not contain any quotes directly mentioning the theory of global warming.

With an earthquake strong enough to move islands, a monster tsunami would have resulted regardless of the “creeping rise in sea levels”.

Can the lefty media give it a rest for a week or so while we focus on rescue efforts?

Liberal Larry has the proof that George W. Bush caused the horrible earthquake and tsunami in South Asia.

As any free-thinking Democratic Underground member would, I naturally suspected Bush’s refusal to sign Kyoto was the root cause of yesterday’s cataclysm. But as I dug deeper and began linking completely unrelated events together with unsubstantiated rumors, urban legends, and drug-induced fantasies, I soon realized that there was something far more sinister at work here. By the end of the day, I had compiled and printed hundreds of DU articles and alt.sex newsgroup threads proving Shrub’s complicity in the disaster.

His research to support his hypothesis seem to be pretty extensive. Larry checks all the liberal standard sources. Democratic Underground is certainly the authority on the real goings on inside the Bush Administration. His fact checking methods really are something to be admired. (Can you hear the gagging sounds I’m making right now? That’s me choking on my sarcarsm.)

Read Larry’s analysis here.

Arizona is the second fastest growing state in the country (behind Nevada). Planned communities (like the ones by Del Webb) are popping up everywhere all over the metro Phoenix area.

New development and planned communities inevitably lead to home owner’s associations. I’ve heard so many HOA horror stories that I could probably write a book. I have a theory that HOA boards were all the kids in high school that wanted to be cool but never were. Now that they have power, they’re getting even. But that’s a discussion for another time.

This new HOA trend is going a step too far, and I have something to say about it.

One more Crazy Christmas story for you… courtesy of Zero Intelligence.

Bryan Lanford was in the holiday spirit. He dressed up as Santa to attend the Hampton Academy Junior High School holiday party. Unfortunately the Grinch (cleverly disguised as Interim Principal Fred Muscara) saw him coming.

“I went to the dance with my friend,” said Bryan Lafond, who is in seventh grade. “He had an elf hat on and we thought it was pretty cool. Everyone loved the suit, but when I went by the principal, he asked why I was dressed like that.”

Principal Fred Muscara said he told the boy he couldn’t get into the dance because he was wearing the costume.

“It was a holiday party,” said Muscara. “It was not a Christmas party. There is a separation of church and state. We have a lot of students that go to Hampton Academy Junior High that have different religions. We have to be sensitive to that.”

And this guy is educating the leaders of tomorrow.

Well, the School of Journalism that bears his name is. The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University has lost its full accreditation because it’s not liberal enough.

Accreditors found curriculum and classes at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication lack leadership, fail to promote woman and ignore diversity.

Oh No! Say it isn’t so! How is the school failing to promote women and ignoring diversity?

The five-member team found no woman has been promoted to full professor in the school’s 50-year history, the percentage of minority faculty dropped from four to two in six years and no minorities were considered for the 42 adjunct faculty positions filled in the last three years.

Um, here’s a nutty thought - maybe there were no qualified female or minority applicants? I know that’s a revolutionary idea, but it’s crazy enough to make some sense.

I’m all for equality of opportunity for women and minorities in business, education etc. If you do the same work, you should be treated the same. But organizations like the Accreditng Council warp “equality of opportunity” into “equality of results”. The two are not interchangeable.

The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the folks who conducted the review, had no complaints on the quality of the education at the Cronkite School.

Despite the recommendation of provisional status, the team did cite many strengths the school demonstrated, including “high-quality teaching,” and “significant opportunities to work at campus media and the television station.”

The current faculty is top notch and the education obtained at the Cronkite school leads to many opportunities for its gradutates. Isn’t that what a post-secondary institution is suppossed to be all about? The skin color and sex of the students and/or faculty really shouldn’t matter.

Enough with the comparisons to Washington State and Ukraine. The Ukranian people have demonstrated they wouldn’t put up with the false election of Viktor Yanukovich.

Some Republican leaders in Washington State have called for new elections there as well, but the idea appears not to have gained much traction.

So let’s end the comparison between the two. It just seems disrespectful to the Ukrainian voters (or those voting for Viktor Yushchenko) who actually fought and won, as opposed to general apathy demonstrated by voters in Washington State.

In one of my previous incarnations, I was the host of a sports talk show. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of athletes, but one of my favorites was Reggie White. A very nice guy, a humble man, and a great athlete. One of my favorite pieces of sports memorabilia is a football signed by Reggie White.

I can’t believe he’s no longer with us. He will be missed.

I recently adopted a solider through Operation AC. It’s a great organization run by a wonderful woman. (If you’re doing a little year end tax planning and looking to make some charitable contributions before the end of next week, Frankie would greatly appreciate it.)

I’ve already sent him two care packages packed full of goodies, and I’m getting ready to send him another one. But I’m running out of ideas of what to include in the box. I’ve sent things like disposable cameras, a poker set, edible goodies like Goldfish and Blow Pops. I don’t want to keep sending the same things, that gets boring.

I was hoping that you guys (especially those of you who served in the military) could give me some suggestions on what my soldier might like. Obviously no porn, pork products, or anything that might melt.

I’d appreciate your input.

Wonder what a Palestinian terrorist does with his loads of blood money? He invests in the US. Makes sense to me - the dollar is weak against the Euro, foreign investment in the US is very profitable right now. Buy low, sell high, blahblahblah.

If you were Yasser Arafat, where would you put your cash? Index funds? Real Estate? No. Bowling alleys. Arafat invested in US bowling alleys.

No, I’m not kidding.

A business magazine revealed Wednesday that the late Yasser Arafat’s investments in U.S. companies included $1.3 million in the New York company that owns Strike Bethesda and three other bowling alleys

Bowling alleys? It must be the shoes.

Bush has renominated 20 judges that have been stuck in the Judiciary Committee, under threat of filibuster by Senate Democrats.

If Linda McMahon could somehow turn judical confirmation hearings into PayPer View events, I would tune in to see if John Kyl hits someone over the head with a steel chair. C-Span just doesn’t have the same glitz as a WWE event.

On Monday, when we were all focused on how horrible Donald Rumsfeld is, Bill Frist (R - TN) announced the Senate’s GOP committee assignments.

Some noteworthy highlights:

- John McCain (R - AZ) is no longer chair of the Commerce Committee. Being term limited out, he will now chair the Indian Affairs Committee. For all his blustering and noisemaking on reforming boxing and baseball, he will now have significantly less power to do so.

Not to discount the importance of Indian Affairs, but it seems to me like McCain was demoted.

- Arlen Specter (R - PA) will continue to chair the Judiciary Committee. That’s not news. However two new appointments to the Judiciary Committee are newsworthy. Tom Coburn (R - OK) and Sam Brownback (R - KS) will be joining Specter on the committee. Both Senators are strong opponents of abortion. Should make for some explosive confirmation hearings.

I can’t wait. - where’s my popcorn?

- The tax geek in me is encouraged to see Lamar Alexander (R - TN) and Lindsey Graham (R - S.C.) will be joining the budget committee. I think their voices will encourage a more constructive debate on a comprehensive solution to Social Security solvency.

Though I am leery of Graham’s openness to increase taxes to make private Social Security accounts a reality.

Let the fun begin.

Nothing says “Christmas humor” like pictures of kids who are scared by Santa.

Actually, when you look at some of these Santas, it’s no wonder the kids are freaked. This Santa scares the bejeebers out of me!

As promised, my disagreement with Lileks. To preface, I think James Lileks might be the most underrated American writer living today, but he’s still largely off base (at least in my opinion) with this column.

In a sense, blogging is so 2004. The next big thing will be videoblogs. You can fit a rudimentary TV studio in a suitcase — a laptop, a camcorder, a few cables, and a nearby Starbucks with Wi-Fi you can leech onto to upload your reports. This too will be good. One hundred thousand pairs of eyes looking high and low, versus CBS’ staring monocular orb. We’ll all turn to the nets to see what they think we should think. And then we’ll hit the blogs for the rest of the story.

I’ll trust Lileks when he says videoblogs are the next big thing (and I’ll admit to thinking The Daily Recycler is one of the most inventive blogs around). But 100,000 blogs? Sorry James, that’s where I have to disagree.

We’re already seeing the haves and the have-nots of the blogosphere. For every Glenn Reynolds or Jim Gerahty, there are 1000 guys like me, quietly blogging this and that. Sure, we might get linked by one of the big boys every now and then, but is that really so different than a local story being picked up by one of the networks?

I think what we’re doing is replacing one type of media with another, while still maintaining much the same system of delivery. The big boys of the blogs are the new anchors, and the little blogs like mine are the field reporters and affiliates. Is it a bad system? No. It works, obviously. But this isn’t a revolution. It’s just a changing of the guard. We’ve got our own “personalities” complete with egos and bias. We’ve got our own shoddy reporting. Heck, you could probably even find the blogger equivalent of an Arthur Kent-ish “Scud Stud” if you looked hard enough (and I’d like to be the first to compare the Wonkette popularity to the flash in the pan that was Ashleigh Banfield, thank you very much).

It could be that I wake up tomorrow with a much more optimistic view of what the future holds for the blogosphere, but in all candor, right now I’m somewhat pessimistic.

Don’t take it personally, Mr. Lileks. I still bought both your books as Christmas presents.

I’m not a resident of Ukraine Washington state. This is just laughable. Gregoire now leads by ten votes? And this is the most laughable statement yet.

“We asked for a hand count because we knew machines make mistakes,” said state Democratic Party spokeswoman Kirstin Brost. “We believe that the hand count is the most accurate count and we’re very excited by these results.”

Machines make mistakes… yet people don’t? You’re excited by the results because your candidate is about to steal win office.

Just a word of caution… don’t be surprised if the people of Washington State aren’t quite as excited as you are.

No more cheap thrills for airport security screeners. The TSA has changed the pat down policy. Government employees can no longer use “security” as an excuse to feel me up.

Security screeners will now keep their hands to the “chest perimeter” of women unless detection equipment picks up the possibility that they are hiding explosives between their breasts.

Now why wasn’t this the policy in the first place? The technology exists - it should have been.
