Questions for Republicans or Bush supporters heading into Thursday’s debate:
1- Are you nervous about one, two, or many “Bushisms”? Remember, there are no note cards allowed at the podium.
2- Is it more important for the president to defend his stance on Iraq, or attack John Kerry’s positions on Iraq?
Questions for Democrats or Kerry supporters:
1- Is there a way for Kerry to succinctly and plainly refute the “flip-flop” charge in a way that undecided American voters will believe?
2- Are you worried that the Senator will be too verbose and long-winded in his answers?
And a question for all involved: what’s your biggest fear regarding your candidate and Thursday’s debate?
Republican #1- I’m not worried. I’m expecting a few Bushisms. If anything I’d like to see the President pull a pre-emptive strike and poke fun at himself for his garbled syntax before he actually flubs.
Republican #2- John Kerry’s going to attack President Bush on Iraq. There’s no question that for better or worse, John Kerry is now an anti-war candidate. I think Bush needs to respond in kind. Here’s a quote I’d like to see from Bush tomorrow night.
My opponent and his campaign advisors have taken to calling the situation in Iraq a quagmire. They’re calling the interim prime minister of Iraq a puppet. The first statement can only serve to embolden those who would like to see us leave Iraq. It can only hurt the morale of our soldiers who are serving in harms way. If by some chance of fate my opponent is in the Oval Office this time next year, his second statement will have done even more damage than the first. By failing to recognize the increasing democracy in Iraq, and indeed to allow his surrogates to call a foreign leader a puppet, he has told the world: This government is not legitimate.
My opponent accuses me of being misguided, of making mistake after mistake. It’s not misguided to desire freedom. It’s not a mistake to fight for democracy. And if I believed the American people felt otherwise, I wouldn’t be running for president.
Obviously I’m not a speechwriter… but you get the gist.
Democrat #1- I’ve yet to think of a way for Kerry to counter the flip-flop charge. This has had months to develop. There’s no way to undo it in 90 minutes. The only way to do it is to make a clean slate of it, admit you’ve been trying to have it both ways and say “no more. I’m an anti-war candidate and will always be.” Two problems with that: it’s not a winning position and it would be political suicide to admit 18 months of comments have been pure politics.
Democrat #2- Am I worried? No. I’m worried that for 90 minutes he’ll be able to keep it simple, stupid. Actually, I think the bigger fear for Democrats should be (and I’m dead serious about this) that Kerry can’t maintain a consistent position for the entire debate.
