Edwards… Cam Edwards

I always feel like James Bond every time I put on a tuxedo. I still look like “The Penguin” from Batman, but I feel like James Bond.

Went to the Headliner Sports Awards banquet tonight.

The highs:

-getting to talk with people like John Brooks (voice of the Oklahoma City Blazers), Berry Tramel (sportswriter for the Oklahoman), and Mick Cornett (Oklahoma City’s new mayor).

-seeing some of the greatest athletes in the state patiently sign autographs for what seemed like 10,000 kids.

-getting Rashaun Woods’ autograph.

-chocolate cake for dessert.

The lows:

-finding out someone you’ve always wanted to meet is a gigantic jackass.

Actually, I’m kind of used to that stuff by now. I remember taking Harrison to a Rangers/Red Sox game a few years ago. It was the first weekend in August, hot as blazes, and Harrison wanted to get there early to try and get some autographs. After struggling to get down to the fence level, he’s trying to get the attention of a Red Sox player. Very politely calling “Mr. Daubach, Mr. Daubach, can I get your autograph”… only to have the guy stroll back and forth, back and forth, hang out talking with other players, shooting the breeze with the groundskeepers, etc. This is Brian Daubach we’re talking about here, not Pedro Martinez.

He never did get the autograph. I’m sure I’ll get lots of emails from people who’ve personally witnessed Mr. Daubach save kittens from a burning house, help old ladies across the street, bake Girl Scout cookies, etc. And he may very well be a nice guy. All I know is that he was a colossal crank to my 10-year old son.

It’s nice to see guys like Rashaun Woods, Jason White, Derrick Strait, and others be great to kids. It reminds me of a Bryant (Big Country) Reeves story… but that’s probably a tale for another day.
