Gorillas In Queens

I’ve never been a fan of political correctness, but this goes beyond being un-PC. This is just wrong.

The mother of a black Queens girl yesterday pressed for the transfer of a white PS 35 teacher who made a racial “joke” about the gorilla pictured on the girl’s folder.

Rachelle Hogans-Blair said the city’s Education Department did not go far enough in disciplining fourth-grade teacher Gail Kaplan at the Hollis school for remarking to 9-year-old Cheyenne Griffin, “You took a picture of your family and put it on the front of your folder.”

The teacher’s defense?

“I always joke that way with my husband and family,” the family quoted the teacher as saying. “If I had known it was Cheyenne, I wouldn’t have said it.”

Isolated incident or not, this girl shouldn’t have to have Gail Kaplan as a teacher anymore. Normally that would require the girl transfer to another class, but apparently that’s not much of an option.

The school offered to transfer Cheyenne from the class, but it is PS 35’s only accelerated class for fourth-graders and Cheyenne does not want to leave her four close friends.The attorney has suggested Kaplan switch with another teacher and return to the accelerated class next year when Cheyenne is in the-fifth grade.

That actually seems pretty reasonable to me. The teacher gets to keep her job, the student doesn’t have to be around a teacher that’s made her uncomfortable (to say the least).
Here’s a little tip for teachers (and talk show hosts). Don’t mention gorillas, chimpanzees, monkeys and the like when you’re talking about black Americans. Whether or not you are a racist, it’s not the thing to say.
