Fighting the Nanny State Since 2003

Well, not really, but as close to debauchery as I ever get. The next three days are like my own little national holiday… Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Arbor Day… all rolled into one.

Tomorrow I head down to Dallas. I’m going to go see my beloved Boston Red Sox whup up on the Texas Rangers. As an added bonus, Pedro Martinez will take the mound for the Sox.
After the game, I get in my car and drive back to Oklahoma City for Friday’s show. Yes, I know… I’m insane.

Friday is my wedding anniversary, and the lovely Elaine and I will be dining out, then snuggling on the couch (I hope). She’s actually on call this weekend, but hopefully it won’t be too busy.

As if that wasn’t enough, Saturday is my birthday. And of course, that means presents. In fact, I’m such a present hog that I’ve finally given in to the basest of instincts: greed. I’ve set up a wish list at Amazon.com, but as of yet it’s not active. I’m hoping Bruce will buy me a copy of “Mein Kampf”, Jim will get me “Unix for Dummies”, and Alfredo will get me the “Ann Coulter Collection”.

More politcally correct baloney. Black History will be taught by a black teacher in Oberlin, Ohio after much debate over whether race should play a factor in who teaches the class.

“We are going to have the African-American teacher teach the African-American course,” Superintendent Bev Reep said. …
“All things being equal, it probably would be best to have a black teacher teach the course because (he or she would) be sensitive to the nuances of the culture,” said Michael Williams, the interim director of black studies at Cleveland State University. …
Apparently, budget cuts at the high school had forced the African-American history class to couple with a U.S. government class, and the black teacher who taught the history course for years is not state-certified to teach government.
But NewsChannel5 learned that the black teacher will apply for a two-year temporary state certification to teach government.

So not only is the school district bowing to politically correct nonsense, they’re going to let a teacher not certified teach a class because it’s the cowardly “sensitive” thing to do.
I guess now we need to make sure that no Asian-American ever teaches Western Civilization.

I’m not usually one to applaud lawsuits over minor things, but there’s something in this story that makes me smile.

Las Vegan Aristotelis Belavilas got so fed up waiting three hours to see his doctor for his back pain that he stormed out of the office without getting treatment.
Then the 58-year-old sued. He asked for $5,000. It wasn’t about the money, he said, but to “teach the doctor a lesson” about treating patients with respect and compassion.
Last week, he was awarded $250 in small claims court.

Maybe it’s the fact that I recently waited two hours to see a doctor for ten minutes.

A Florida couple’s avoided prosecution for chaining their teen sons to their beds in an attempt to stop their criminal behavior.
It’s stories like this that make me so thankful my daughter, while having an attitude, does not get into serious trouble. In fact, she’s recently started volunteering at a teen help line.
I still wonder, however, what the state would have had mom do instead. I mean, she was obviously at the end of her rope. I feel more sorry for her than I do the kids.

One in ten tech jobs could move out of the United States by the end of next year, headed to places like India or Russia.
Great for the bottom line, devastating for the country.

“Offshore outsourcing” is the euphemism the computer industry uses to describe the transformation of software development, computer services and customer call-center work.
As a global economic recession has hit hard over the past two years, U.S. companies have embraced as never before a decades-old trend to hire educated workers overseas who can be employed for a fraction of the cost of U.S.-based programmers.

Well, I’m glad to know that Sirhan in New Delhi will be taking my wife’s computer programming job soon. He probably needs the work more than she does.

The mounting job losses are heating up as a political issue, with bills put forward by legislators in five U.S. states that would require workers hired under state contracts be American citizens or fill a special niche citizens cannot fill.

I’m all for this. In fact, is there anyway we can take it a step further?
Gah, I sound like Pat Buchanan… but at some point you have to be selfish. It’s not about what’s best for the world… it’s about what’s best for me and my family. Losing a tech job to someone who’ll do the job for eight bucks an hour isn’t good for me, my wife, or my kids.
Time to tighten up the borders and stop the flow of jobs from this country.

I’m jealous. I’ve been perusing Technorati’s list of the “Top Newcomers”, and there are three of my favorites on the list.
I, however, am not.
Anyway, congrats to The Ville, blogoSFERICS, and the fine gals at Absinthe and Cookies.
If you haven’t read any of these, you really should check them out. Just promise me you’ll still come back.

Never thought I’d be typing that headline, but then again, it’s not every day that a company announces it won’t be shipping jobs overseas.
Meanwhile, Wrangler’s closing it’s plant in Seminole, Oklahoma. The plant makes up seven percent of the workforce in the county… but hey, if people aren’t buying the jeans, you gotta do something. I can’t help but wonder however, if the company turns things around, will the jobs come back or will workers in some Third World sweatshop be assembling your jeans?

Texas lawmakers have once again left the building.
This time they’re in Albuquerque, New Mexico. What’s the matter… Ardmore not offer enough fun activities for you?
This is bordering on ridiculous. Governor Perry of Texas knows this is going to happen. Democrats in Texas know this is going to happen. Redistricting, as much as the Republicans might like it, isn’t going to happen. Why waste time and taxpayer dollars on what amounts to a political game of “chicken”?
Oh, and I love this line:

Senate rules require that two-thirds of the chamber support a bill before it can be taken up for debate. Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has said he would do away with that rule during the second session so that only a majority would be needed to debate a bill.

Don’t do it. Don’t bend the law to benefit your party. I hate it when the Democrats do it, and I hate it when Republicans do it. I’d say “show some class”, but I think what I really mean is “show some honor”.

How on earth is this happening? New York City is opening a full-fledged high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students.”
How is this not discriminating? How is this not seperate but equal? How can this discrimination take place??
Oh wait. It’s not discrimination because the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students want this.

State Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long blasted the school as “social engineering” that wastes tax dollars.
“Is there a different way to teach homosexuals? Is there gay math? This is wrong. This makes absolutely no sense,” Long said. “There’s no reason these children should be treated separately.”

Amen to that. Oh wait, still can’t talk about prayer in school. Sorry about that.

Bob Hope is dead at the age of 100, but that doesn’t mean our memories have died as well.
We remember his many concerts for servicemen around the globe. We remember his trademark grin and self-depreciating humor.

“The Stealth bomber,” he told soldiers during the Persian Gulf War. “Big deal. Flies in undetected, bombs and then flies away.” Pause. “Hell, I’ve been doing that all my life.”

We’ve all heard the line “I support the troops, I just don’t support the mission.” Bob Hope epitomized supporting the troops. Bob Hope was a funny man with a serious message. Here’s what he had to say about spending every Christmas with the military.

“I wouldn’t have been able to look into the mirror, you know? I had to go for those kids. I’d like to thank every kid in uniform for the honor of working for him.”

Thank you, Bob. Thanks for all you did.

You just might get it. Puerto Ricans are now complaining about the closing of the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. This comes after Puerto Ricans complained about the bombing on the island of Vieques. After the protests, the U.S. decided to pull all military out of Puerto Rico, since it’s primary mission can no longer be conducted there. But angry Puerto Ricans won’t be stopped by mere logic.

“You dedicate all your talents, all your efforts. You’re loyal to your employer, this case being the U.S. Navy, and what do you get in return? A kick in the you-know-what,” said Ana Angelet of the Puerto Rican chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees.

Oklahoma’s own Senator Jim Inhofe says it best.

“I just think it’s a shame that the people, the ones that are suffering, are the people of Puerto Rico because it was the politicians that did it to them,” Inhofe said.

That would be Puerto Rican politicians, by the way.

I’m as patriotic as the next guy, but there’s nothing wrong with saying the President has the legs of a chicken.

A Baltimore acoustic artist has been banned from playing the Fredericksburg Borders Books & Music store–apparently because she made fun of President Bush’s legs between songs in her show Friday night at Central Park.
Julia Rose, a singer-songwriter and a fitness advocate who often shows audiences her six-pack abs, told a Fredericksburg Borders audience Friday: “George Bush has chicken legs. He needs to pump some iron.”
“I never bashed Bush as president. I merely said his lower body needs some serious definition,” Rose explained later.
She said most of the audience laughed. But a few were offended and reportedly contacted Amy Korsun, area marketing manager for Borders Books & Music, to complain about Rose making “political” comments.

Of course, when Julia Rose comments on the President’s legs, she’s opening herself up to other’s opinions of her body. I visited her web site hoping to find a few pictures, and I wasn’t disappointed. Well, in a way I was. After gazing over her photos, I’d offer just a couple of suggestions. One, your hair looks better when it’s pulled back away from your face. Two, wear that white dress at every available opportunity. Even a paleolithic conservative jerk like me goes “bwah-huh” when he sees something like that. And remember, it wasn’t George Bush who banned you from Borders, it was people who are so politically correct that they can’t tell a putdown from a profanity.

I’ll be taking a few days off from the blog. Next weekend is my wedding anniversary, and I’m taking my bride away to celebrate a little early.

Have a great weekend, stay out of trouble, and look for an update on Sunday night.

By the way, I received an email from Chris Muir, the creator of Day by Day. Looks like the cartoon’s coming back early! Yay!

Alright, now I really am gone.

Oh wait. I wanted to rag on the Oklahoma Gazette today on the air but never got a chance. Not only did I not make the “best morning show team” finals, I didn’t make the list of “people we should kick out of Oklahoma City”. I must be doing something wrong.

Ah well. The Gazette’s lost a lot of street cred in my mind anyway. How hypocritical is it to have a cover story about a lesbian couple that’s been together for 42 years, yet refuse to accept personal ads from gays and lesbians? I mean, really guys… if you’re going to try and be an “alternative” paper, have the cojones to be different.

Okay, now I’m really going.

Oh, one more thing. If you haven’t heard the new Johnny Cash album yet… it’s incredible. I highly recommend you purchase it if you like the Man in Black.

NEA Executive Committee member Wayne Nadeau has resigned his post, two days after the OEA called for his removal from office.
That call came just hours after First News brought the case to the attention of Oklahomans. We were inundated with calls from people who were outraged, and apparently the OEA was listening.
Congratulations. You did it.

Every now and then I like to peruse the message board at okdemocrat.com. It’s always fun to see what the other side thinks. Mostly they seem to think the phrase “repug” is the most amusing thing in the world (which explains why conservatives have a better sense of humor than liberals).
Today, however, there are a couple of classic posts, like this one, accusing Rep. John Sullivan of being drunk when a parking gate hit his car. Never mind that the Congressman wasn’t even driving… oh no, he must be drunk, or it must be a conspiracy.
Then there’s this post, accusing the Bush administration of having a “secret deal” with the Hussein Bros. It’s amazing that Bush is either an evil genius or a complete dumbass, depending on what the liberals want him to be.
Anyway, if you haven’t paid Rusty and the gang a visit lately… enjoy yourself, but be nice.

I am sometimes still amazed at the power of radio.
Yesterday I spent about an hour discussing Wayne Nadeau, the NEA Executive Committee member elected without informing union members of his one month suspension for having sex in the classroom.
Keep in mind that this story has been floating around the internet for almost a week. Therefore, I’m assuming it’s no coincidence that this morning’s Daily Oklahoman features a story about the Oklahoma Education Association calling on Nadeau to resign.
The great thing about this story is it shows the union officials are listening. Not just to my show, but to the other listeners who called in to offer their opinion.
Way to go. And of course, now that I know I have their ear, I’ll never shut up about the teacher unions!

According to Reuters, almost one in three Germans under the age of 30 believe the United States sponsored the 9/11 attacks.

Asked whether they believed that the U.S. government could have ordered the September 11 attacks itself, 31 percent of those surveyed under the age of 30 in the poll answered “yes”, while 19 percent overall gave the same answer.
Die Zeit said widespread disbelief about the reasons given by the United States for going to war in Iraq and suspicion about media coverage of the conflict had fostered a climate in which conspiracy theories flourished.
“The news is controlled,” 17-year old Kenny Donaubaur was quoted as saying. “You could see that in the Iraq war. It doesn’t seem to me thet you get the full truth.”

The kid’s right about one thing… the news is controlled and you don’t get the full truth. But can you imagine the media in this country NOT reporting something like this? I’m surprised ABC hasn’t already run a story saying “German intelligence suggests the Bush administration was behind 9/11.”

From the NY Times:

Military commanders in Iraq and Pentagon officials in Washington today defended the decision to storm the house in Mosul where Saddam Hussein’s sons were hiding rather than try to encircle it and force them to surrender, much as the United States did with Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega in Panama in 1989.

Head… pounding… Going… to…. explode….
Here’s a message to those of you criticising the decision:
Two months ago you were the ones bitching about the military acting as police in Iraq. Now when they act like military, you want them to act like police. And you know, there are some differences between the Hussein Bros. and Pineapple Head.
Here’s a quote for you, from General Barry McCaffrey.

“Would they be incredibly valuable as intelligence assets? Yes. Would it be extremely valuable to put them on trial before the Iraqi people? Yes.
But it’s also always nonsensical to risk losing them to escape, risk 40 days of a Waco standoff.”

Apparently the same folks who wanted to see a seige in Mosul are the same ones who think what happened in Waco was a tactical success.
I’d remind you that David Koresh wasn’t taken alive either.

It’ll be said elsewhere, but let me say it as well. The death of a New York City Councilman should not lead to a call for gun control. It should lead to a call for everybody to play by the same rules.
Remember a few weeks ago when Tom Harkin bullied his way onto an airline flight? Yes, he cut in line, but he still went through security. Many people questioned why a U.S. Senator should have to go through that rigamorole. This is why.
The city councilman bypassed security, as did the gunman (who was walking with the councilman). The gun wasn’t discovered because it was assumed this individual was “okay”. After all, he was with a city councilman.
Don’t blame guns. Blame bad security, blame human nature, and blame the bastard that pulled the trigger.

Just wanted to share this story with you.

I went to school with David and Carrie. They were a year behind me, so I didn’t know them too well, but they were the type of kids that everybody “knew”. David played football and basketball, Carrie was in the honor society and was the star player on our school’s softball team. She also dated my best friend for about a year while we were in high school.

David and Carrie were always friendly, but they never went out with each other. They hung out in the same group of 6 or 8 people, but that was it.

I guess it was after college that the two of them started talking again. They talked about the feelings they had for one another back in high school, and realized those feelings had never gone away.

Last year, David and Carrie got married.

This week, Carrie Dixon-Cook died. She was 28.

What makes this such a love story to me is that David knew Carrie was dying when he proposed. Shortly after college, Carrie was diagnosed with cancer, and she spent the past four years fighting it. By the time the cancer was discovered, it had spread throughout her body, so chemotherapy was basically her only option. The doctors didn’t give her any chance of recovery, and sadly they were right.

To marry someone for life, knowing that life may only be months away from ending… I can’t even put into words how that makes me feel. To be a widow at age 27. To honeymoon, then spend the next few months by your wife’s side in the hospital. To say goodbye, when you just said “I do”.

I just found out about Carrie’s death by reading this morning’s paper. It wasn’t a story, just an obituary. I just thought that in this day and age of “if it bleeds, it leads”, “what did he know and when did he know it”, and “I committed adultery but not rape”, that you might like to hear a love story.

Why do you keep bringing up the “16 little words”?

Stephen Hadley, President Bush’s deputy national security adviser, on Tuesday became the second administration official to apologize for allowing a tainted intelligence report on Iraq’s nuclear ambitions into Bush’s State of the Union address.

Why do you keep addressing this issue? I can only assume one of two things: your political handlers are setting up the Democrats somehow, or your political handlers have the brainpower of squirrels.
Let it go, Dubya. Just let it go. You’re not going to get a fair shake in the media, so ignore them for now. Concentrate on the economy, concentrate on the present and future of Iraq. Let the Democrats work themselves into a tizzy on this, because most Americans don’t care.
Don’t give them a reason to begin caring about this non-issue. Don’t give the Democrats ammunition.
Let it go, Dubya. Just let it go.

Posted by: Cam

Tony Blair’s taking as much heat as Dubya these days, but as the New York Post points out, it’s really the BBC that should be under fire.
Of course, it’s not like the media’s going to tell you that.

News reports are coming in about the possible capture of Uday and Qusay Hussein in Iraq.

Here’s the story from MSNBC.

Saddam Hussein’s two sons may have been found in Iraq during a shoot-out in Mosul in which U.S. soldiers killed four high-ranking Iraqis, U.S. officials said on Tuesday.
‘’There is a pretty decent chance'’ that Saddam’s sons Uday and Qusay were there during the shoot-out, one official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Not quite as shocking as the first reports, but then again… they never are.
Update
Yeah, they’re dead. I can only wonder what this woman is thinking.
