Pat Buchanan Is A Boob

Hey, maybe it’ll get me back in the Washington Post.
If you’ve read Buchanan’s latest column, you might have been struck by the same thought I had. Namely… what’s Pat been smoking?

This is not 1963. Americans no longer have the same patience or trust in government we had when JFK took us into Vietnam. We are no longer willing to have Americans die in open-ended wars for unexplained ends. Dean Rusk’s familiar mantra, “We are there, and we are committed,” is no longer enough.

Does he not remember the 60’s?
Meanwhile, Bush’s approval rating remains strong. Americans (and a vast majority of Iraqis) are determined to see that country free from the violence of the Ba’athists, the Islamists, and the criminal element (I’d settle for two out of three). You want to know what our mission is, Mr. Buchanan? It’s to help rebuild what we have destroyed. Kind of like what our fathers did in Germany and Japan after WWII. How long were we in Germany? How long were we in Japan?
That’s right. We’re still there.
You want an exit strategy? Here’s one: turn off your computer, exit your office, go home and take a nap. You want an exit strategy for Iraq, on the other hand, I’m not sure I can give you one.
You complain about the notion of Americans being in Iraq five years from now. What if Iraq is a new country in five years? What if the Ba’athists are no more? What if Saddam is rotting in a prison cell awaiting trial for war crimes? What if the universities are open again, the power’s back on, the oil is flowing and the revenues are padding the wallets and purses of the people of Iraq? Will it still be a bad thing that we’re there, or will you still complain about American imperialism?
(and they say I can’t disagree with a conservative..)
