One Nation, Two Different Worlds

Chaz over at Dustbury alerts me to fact that someone’s asking the question “what do conservatives conserve?”

I’m sure it’s just me, but “In God we trust” on coins, and “one nation, under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Christmas as a federal holiday, and the swearing in of public officials on the (Jewish-Christian) Bible, and the recent moves regarding “faith-based” organizations…I don’t know: it is true, I’ll admit, that it’s not Establishment of one religion, a la Church of England, but it’s uncomfortably close for me. Any one of those could be tolerable–and hey, I grew up in this country with most of them–but put it all together with a president who claims that his “favorite philosopher” is Jesus Christ (and he’s the “faith-based initiatives” guy) and a Rick Santorum in the Senate and an Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court, and I have to say, I do get nervous.

So…. public officials aren’t allowed to be religious? Or maybe our elected officials should only be allowed to come from minority religions like Wicca and Zoroastrianism. Come on. You can’t be serious. Regardless of how you feel about it, we just said it’s perfectly fine for two guys to sodomize each other (as well as opening the door to legalized prostitution, group sex, and other typically non-Christian activities). You’re worried that we’re becoming too Christian? I’m worried I’m going to wake up one day and Christianity will be outlawed because it’s not “inclusive” enough.

I tuned out after that. Someone let me know if it gets any better.

What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.
